TxDOT awards ~$800,000 safety funds to study and close Nasuda Road crossover; commissioners urge temporary controls

Nicholas Hial, geographic traffic lead with Colliers Engineering Design, presented a safety study for the Nasuda Road crossover at US 287 and Business 287. Hial said the firm identified seven injury crashes directly at the crossover since 2020 and additional fatal or serious crashes in the nearby merge/weave area.
"We submitted our safety study, concept plan, and estimates to TxDOT," Hial said, and the city later received notification that TxDOT approved about $800,000 in federal and state safety funds to pursue a crossover-closure countermeasure. Colliers' concept shows a physical separation (barrier) to prevent the dangerous right-across-left weaving maneuver and associated signing changes and a right-turn lane to channel movements away from the conflict point.
Commissioners and residents pressed Colliers and staff on access impacts to nearby parcels, how many crossovers should remain open, and whether the closure simply shifts risk westward. Hial said Colliers asked TxDOT to reassess weave and merge lengths and that TxDOT has been responsive; he also said TxDOT signaled support for at least one crossover remaining open to enable U-turns and local access logistics.
Several commissioners urged staff to seek short-term, temporary measures (TCP or temporary signage and bagging of left-turn lanes) to reduce dangerous maneuvers during the design and before permanent construction. A police representative reported 23 crash incidents in the broader corridor between June 2023 and June 2024 and described frequent emergency runs to the area; the Colliers team recommended coordinating temporary closures with TxDOT and the state district office.
Hial estimated the project timeline: expedited grant acceptance placed the project on a three-year window and Colliers projects possible construction in late 2025 into early 2026 if TxDOT scheduling and environmental/let schedules align. Staff will coordinate follow-up meetings with TxDOT to refine the weave-length design and the temporary control plan.
