Plan Commission approves Johnson Bank signage replacement, removes electronic message board

Chairperson Manager Houseman and city staff reported that the Plan Commission on June 9 approved a design review for comprehensive replacement of signage at Johnson Bank, located at 200 Sherman Avenue West in the downtown historic mixed‑use district.

Director of Neighborhood and Building Services Drager told the commission the building itself is not historic but falls within the district, and that the Historic Preservation Committee had no comments on the proposed signs. "There's one monument sign that is being replaced. Currently there's an electronic message board that is being replaced with a monument sign with no electronic message board," Drager said, adding that a north‑side wall sign would be removed and other directional signs would be adjusted to meet size and setback requirements.

The staff report found the proposal consistent with the city's comprehensive plan and city ordinances after adjustments made in consultation with the applicant. Drager said staff recommended the Plan Commission approve the requested signs with the conditions listed in the staff report. Following a motion and second, the commission voted in favor; the motion carried unanimously.

The decision means the applicant may proceed with the revised, ordinance‑compliant signage as proposed. The commission did not impose additional design changes beyond those reflected in the staff conditions.
