FPRA approves $380,448 award to Big Belly Solar for downtown trash and recycling receptacles

The Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency voted unanimously Jan. 14 to award bid 2026017 to Big Belly Solar LLC for trash and recycling receptacles across downtown Fort Pierce, Jetty Park and the Riverwalk in the amount of $380,448.60. Commissioner Broderick moved the award and the motion carried on a roll call vote.
The board heard a presentation from Miss Delgado of public works explaining that the package includes 56 downtown units, 28 units for Jetty Park and nine for the Riverwalk. The 150-gallon models will be solar-powered compactors with fullness indicators; smaller 45-gallon units will be non-powered. "They're almost too nice to be trash cans," Commissioner Broderick said during the discussion.
Commissioners asked staff to clarify how many compactors would be included, how wraps and side inserts would be handled, and whether local businesses could sponsor inserts or advertising. Miss Delgado said the large (150-gallon) units would include compactors and a fullness indicator light, that some units will be fully wrapped while others will have interchangeable side inserts, and that staff plans to coordinate wrap designs with Fort Pierce Main Street and the CRA advisory committee for seasonal and event use.
The board also discussed potential revenue offsets and community partnerships. Commissioner Gaines suggested exploring business sponsorship of inserts to defray costs; staff said the idea has been discussed with Riverwalk partners who currently manage similar arrangements.
The motion recorded that item b was approved; Commissioners Broderick, Gaines, Johnson and Chairwoman Hudson voted yes.
