Commission hears board updates on fire department hiring, port marina plans and MLK events; officials mourn local builder Kenneth Drummond

During the meeting commissioners provided a roundup of board and community updates.

Commissioner Gaines (S6) said the Treasure Coast Council of Local Government met recently, noted plans for scholarships and highlighted Martin Luther King weekend activities including a youth symposium and a wreath-laying ceremony. He and others encouraged community participation in upcoming events.

Commissioner Johnson (S3) reported from the fire board that the St. Lucie County fire district is dealing with a staffing shortfall and a coming wave of retirements described as a "human capital cliff"; the board is hiring and evaluating station siting and recruitment strategies.

On port and marina planning, Johnson said the port advisory board reviewed presentations related to the Northern Marina area and considered connections between the marina and Lincoln Park to address floodwater and recreational access; staff will share graphics used in that presentation.

Several commissioners paid tribute to Kenneth Drummond, a local builder whose family constructed many older homes in Lincoln Park; they expressed condolences to his family and recognized his long-term contributions to the city’s built environment.

What happens next: Staff and relevant boards will continue work on recruitment for fire services, port/marina planning and community event coordination; commissioners asked staff to circulate materials from recent port advisory and planning presentations.
