Crawford council tables decision on proposed truck scale after residents raise traffic and safety concerns

Acting Mayor April Grant presided over the City of Crawford council meeting on March 25, 2025, where the council voted to table a final decision on a proposed Crawford Livestock truck scale after significant public comment.
Council Member Scott DeBock had invited residents in the vicinity and members of the White River Trail to the meeting to hear concerns and suggestions about siting the scale. Several opponents said locating the scale on 1st Street would increase heavy-truck traffic at night, raise safety risks for children walking to the park, create drainage and runoff issues into a nearby ditch, and cause periodic waste from trucks. Proponents and a sale-barn representative said a local scale is needed for hay producers and argued the project would not substantially increase traffic and could be monitored for violations.
Council discussion identified several possible alternate locations (including a balloon-building area and an old grain-building site) and a site north of the proposed location. Council asked Attorney Edmund to research ownership and title for the potential alternate site so the council can consider those options.
Council Member Christopher Dean moved to table the approval or disapproval of the installation until the April 9 meeting so the council can investigate alternate sites and title concerns; Council Member Scott DeBock seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously (Dean, DeBock, Grant).
The council will revisit the Crawford Livestock truck-scale proposal at its April 9 meeting with additional information on property ownership and alternative site options.
