Council confirms interim deputy fire chief, approves technical employment amendment and extends county sobering center MOU

Mark Sorensen presented an employment agreement to appoint Shane Lauderdale as interim deputy fire chief while recruitment proceeds. Sorensen said Lauderdale brings extensive fire‑service experience, including prior service as Chico fire chief; the interim deputy position carries an annual salary of $184,218. Council moved and approved the confirmation by unanimous vote.
Council then approved a first amendment to the fire chief employment agreement to allow continued payroll contributions to the retiree medical trust. Sorensen said the change has no cost to the city; council approved the technical amendment unanimously.
Separately, Sorensen recommended extending the MOU with Butte County that commits $119,000 annually from opioid settlement funds for three years to support operations of the county‑run sobering center. Staff provided utilization stats (about 300 admits per month, 60–70 unique individuals depending on month) and said the extension would give operational certainty through June 30, 2030. Council approved the extension 7–0.
