Commission approves Carthage College multi‑use field at Alford Beach, college to fund turf work

The Kenosha Board of Parks Commission on Aug. 11 approved a concept for Carthage College to install a multi‑use intramural field on an underused portion of Alford Beach.
Parks staff said Carthage proposed leasing a small, seldom‑used north end of the beach to install the field without permanent structures, lights or amplified sound. "They want to bring in topsoil and seed it," a parks staff member said, adding the college will perform maintenance at its own cost.
Commissioners asked how the sandy, rocky portion of the shore would be made usable. Staff and the college representative said they will bring in topsoil and seed, at the college's expense, and that the college understands the area can remain wet during high water events; the college said it is willing to accept that risk. Staff also noted the Department of Natural Resources had reviewed the proposal and that the college will not install permanent lights or amplified sound.
The commission voted to approve the concept, subject to standard permitting and administrative steps. The approval permits the college to move forward with the design and permit process but did not authorize permanent structures or lighting.
