KDOT to close north U.S. 75 rest area; Woodson County to end trash service at Greenwood County site

Woodson County commissioners on June 9 heard from Darrin Petrowski of the Kansas Department of Transportation that KDOT plans to permanently close, demolish and sell the north U.S. Highway 75 rest area. Petrowski said the facility would require significant repairs and that keeping it open was not feasible.
Treasurer Michelle Zimmerman reported the county currently handles trash service at a rest area on U.S. Highway 54 in Greenwood County and cautioned that future billing would need to change if KDOT transfers or demolishes facilities. County Counselor Bret Heim raised right-of-way and enforcement concerns and said he had discussed enforcement with the sheriff.
Commissioners requested signage that would promote Yates Center and direct travelers to local fuel and service stations; Petrowski agreed to the signage request. After discussion with Heim and Zimmerman, the commission agreed to discontinue county collection of trash at the Greenwood County rest area effective at the end of the current billing period, which extends through the end of the year. No formal vote tally was recorded on the decision.
The commission directed staff to coordinate billing and service transition details and follow up on signage placement. The action leaves open the question of who will assume ongoing maintenance or disposal costs once KDOT completes demolition or property transfer.
