City events and volunteer coordinator Dan Harris briefed the Milwaukie City Council on summer programming and civic education opportunities, highlighting Milwaukee Fest on July 11 and the ongoing Milwaukee Leadership Academy.
Harris said Milwaukee Fest is scheduled for July 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an anticipated 3,000 attendees during the day, temporary street closures on Maine and Jefferson, a professional stage, expanded food and frozen‑treat vendors, a children’s area and additional medical and cooling resources including misters and water stations. "We're expecting about 3,000 people throughout the course of the day," Harris told council, and staff have planned shade, medical tents and extra water to reduce heat risk.
Harris also provided a recap of the Milwaukee Leadership Academy, a free civic‑education program held monthly through the school year; this cycle drew 25–34 applicants with roughly 20 attendees who completed most sessions. He said recruitment will resume in August and emphasized that the program aims to demystify city government and encourage civic participation.
Councilors praised the events and asked operational questions—whether a dunk tank would return (Harris said insurance and risk-management concerns make that unlikely this year) and where volunteers can sign up. Harris directed residents to milwaukieor.gov/illwaukeefest and the city’s volunteer registration page for signups and noted that Milwaukee Fest programming includes an all‑day schedule and a large beer‑garden operated under OLCC permissions and additional security.
