County mayor, schools and sheriff report community updates and memorial
Summary

County leadership used the Nov. 18 meeting to share community updates and departmental reports.
County Mayor Kerry McCarver presented a Christmas at the Courthouse brochure and announced that Sycamore Square had received multiple awards. He also presented a certificate from veterans recognizing the county’s Veterans Memorial Park and noted that plans for a Highway Department building would be discussed in an upcoming Road and Bridge Committee meeting.
Dr. Cathey Beck, Director of Schools, said Ashland City schools received a literacy grant for all county elementary schools and that Cheatham Middle School received a Broadway Junior grant to perform The Lion King. She described a partnership with Austin Peay State University for a 'Grow Your Own' program to allow teacher aides to work while attending evening classes to earn education degrees. Beck invited the public to attend Thanksgiving lunches at any county school on Nov. 21.
Sheriff Mike Breedlove thanked the community for support following the death of Deputy Stephen Reece and announced funeral arrangements to be held the following day; he noted other local departments would handle calls so county deputies could attend the service. Monthly reports from the Sheriff’s Office were included in the meeting packet.
UT Extension Agent Ronnie Barron summarized Extension activities, including youth leadership work on public speaking and a greenhouse project with the Alternative School; Barron also said the Leadership Cheatham County Program’s Ag Day tour in October was successful.
Committee and calendar reminders were given: the Education Committee planned a School Board work session on the bus garage, Emergency Services updated a Petway-area fire station, and the Calendar Rules committee requested bonded tire shops and proposed moving the January meeting date. Commissioner David Anderson announced he and Corky Albright are producing candidate videos for the city election and encouraged early voting.
