Williston authorizes city attorney to document MDU agreement for lowering airport obstruction light

Airport Manager Rick Marburger reported Dec. 8 that an environmental assessment found no wetlands in the transmission-line corridor and that burying the line could allow aircraft to carry an additional 10,000 pounds. The FAA granted permission to lower an obstruction light by 22 feet, which Marburger said would allow about 750 additional pounds for departing flights if the light is lowered.
Marburger said MDU required three items before proceeding: a city agreement to lower the light, permission for MDU to restore the light if the transmission line is not buried, and payment for the work. MDU provided a rough quote of $2,000 for the lowering. The commission authorized the City Attorney to prepare the required documentation for the mayor’s signature and to move forward and authorize necessary expenditures. Commissioner Bekkedahl moved the action; Commissioner Bogar seconded. The commission asked staff to finalize timing, with Marburger indicating work could occur within a couple of weeks after the agreement is in place.
Marburger also said he and Commissioner Bogar have pursued contacts to explore adding another airline to Williston, and that aviation planning studies were under consideration.
