Williston directs city attorney to review enforcement in one-mile extra-territorial area

At the Dec. 8 meeting the commission directed the City Attorney to research and report on enforcement authority within Williston’s one-mile extra-territorial jurisdiction to clarify which issues fall under city authority and which are handled by the county.
Commissioner Brent Bogar said County Planning and Zoning raised questions about enforcement responsibilities for structures built in the wrong zone, building inspections, junk ordinance enforcement and mowing. Commissioner E. Ward Koeser noted that traffic enforcement such as speeding remains the responsibility of the county sheriff. The motion to direct the attorney passed unanimously. Commissioner Bogar moved the directive and Commissioner Lawson seconded; carried 5-0.
The action is administrative: the commission asked for a legal review to outline enforcement roles so staff and officials can ensure consistent enforcement in the extra-territorial area.
