Williston commission clears Air Force landings for mosquito control, backs Great Lakes Airlines for EAS

The Williston Board of City Commissioners unanimously approved two airport-related actions on Oct. 14: allowing Air Force C-130 aircraft to land at Williston Airport as needed for Vector Control mosquito-spraying operations, and sending a resolution supporting Great Lakes Airlines’ bid to continue Essential Air Service (EAS) between Dickinson and Denver.
Airport official Rick Marburger told the board the airport’s runways are designed to accommodate the larger military transport and that the operational impact would be comparable to existing jet traffic. "Everything seems to be in order for this to happen; it all just depends on the amount of funding Vector Control can come up with to pay for the product," Marburger said.
On regional air service, President E. Ward Koeser recommended the commission send a letter of support to the Essential Air Service decisionmakers favoring Great Lakes Airways because Dickinson officials had expressed concern about an alternate new carrier that lacks an operational track record. The board approved Resolution No. 08-24 in support of awarding the contract to Great Lakes Airlines.
Both motions carried unanimously. Staff said the Air Force would provide aircraft and materials and that local airport resources would be used for aircraft handling as needed.
