Henderson County Fiscal Court on June 9 approved a memorandum of understanding with the City of Henderson and Henderson County Schools to establish a Fire Science career pathway at Henderson County High School.
Judge/Executive Brad Schneider said the agreement is intended to create a pathway for high-school students to pursue fire-service careers and to help address a shortage of volunteer firefighters in the county. Under the memorandum, the City of Henderson will provide a trained and approved City firefighter to serve as the course instructor. The County, the City and Henderson County High School will each pay 33.3% of the instructor's salary, and the county will reimburse the City within 30 days of receiving an invoice.
Magistrate Puttman moved to authorize Judge Schneider to sign the memorandum; Magistrate Southard seconded the motion and the court approved it by voice vote.
The MOU formalizes a partnership between local government and the school district intended to give students classroom training and a potential recruitment pipeline into volunteer and professional firefighting.
