Principal Rebecca praised colleagues for their decades of service and described the retirees as staunch advocates for students. "She cared about those kids," Rebecca said of one honoree, adding the district will miss their institutional knowledge.
Superintendent (name not specified) reported what he described as a strong year academically, saying the district has seen growth on PM3 assessments and is likely to receive an "A" district grade for the seventh consecutive year pending official confirmation. He told the board the district is nearly fully staffed for the upcoming school year, with one vacancy remaining.
On school safety, the superintendent highlighted the work of Ricky Sanderson, the outgoing district school safety specialist, saying the most important measure of success was that the district had not experienced incidents of school violence during his tenure. Sanderson told the board, "It's been a pleasure, guys. It really has," and said he hopes to continue helping the district on a volunteer basis.
The superintendent also briefed the board on a legislative budget request (LBR) for $120,000 that was included in the state budget to fund safety improvements at W.R. Tolar High School and other campus locations. If approved by the governor, those funds would be used to retrofit classroom door sidelights, replace frames and apply protective film to vulnerable windows to "increase safety for our students and staff," he said. Staff told the board contractors and materials are ready to begin work if funds are released.
The meeting recessed briefly for photos and to honor retirees before resuming routine business.
The board's next steps include waiting for official state action on the budget and continuing recruitment to fill the remaining instructional vacancy. The superintendent said he will share confirmation of the district grade and any updates about the LBR when available.
