Police chief reports festival coverage, background check progress and policy updates

Police Chief David Pernice reported at the June 25 Union City Borough Council meeting that the department will have increased coverage for the upcoming French Creek Festival. Erie County detectives agreed to fund overtime and provide two to three officers from the Erie County Courthouse to assist festival coverage, Chief Pernice said.
Pernice also reported he has requested additional coverage from Corry PSP but had not yet received a response, and that he is completing a background check as required by Civil Service rules with an expected completion date around July 5. He told council he is using Lexipol to make policy updates and is removing policies determined not to be needed; those changes are subject to solicitor review before being finalized.
During the report Chief Pernice relayed community fundraising figures for nearby golf scrambles—Corry reported approximately $16,000 and Warren reported $18,000–$20,000—and councilor Cross asked him to check with UC Country Club for its highest fundraising totals. Chief Pernice framed the policy updates as part of an ongoing review and indicated staff are working with the solicitor to finalize language.
The council took no formal action on policing policy changes at the meeting; the chief’s update was a report for council and the public.
