Mentor — The Mentor City Council on June 16 authorized the city manager to execute an agreement to acquire approximately 12.54 acres adjacent to Blackbrook Golf Course (permanent parcel numbers 16D1070000180, 16D1070000150 and 16D1070000220) from the Iaboni family.
City Manager Michael Filipiak told council the city completed an appraisal and the family agreed to the appraised price. Filipiak said the primary municipal use will be to provide flexibility for future golf course realignment and potential replacement of the pro shop, to expand maintenance operations, and to create a buffer between the course and likely residential development that could otherwise bring recurring complaints from neighbors.
Council member John Blake questioned intended uses and raised the possibility that the land might be attractive for housing, but staff said the main purpose is to benefit the golf course and municipal facilities in the long term. Filipiak said the agreement contemplates the family vacating the property and estimated the transfer would occur in mid‑August (he referenced Aug. 10 or Aug. 15 as approximate dates).
The ordinance authorizing the purchase passed on a roll‑call vote. Staff said next steps include coordinating closing logistics, potential demolition of structures with assistance from the Lake County Land Bank, and future appropriations if council decides to replace or relocate golf course facilities.
