Waukesha board approves $350,000 HVAC contract for municipal garage

The Waukesha City Board of Public Works voted Aug. 7 to accept a $350,000 bid from Surefire Incorporated to replace the HVAC system at the municipal garage.
Public Works staff told the board three bids were received and recommended the low bid from Surefire based on a prequalification review and positive references. When a board member asked why Surefire's bid came in well below the others, staff said the discrepancy likely reflected contractor availability and capacity rather than differences in scope.
"We did review their prequalification. We called references and they came back very highly rated from previous projects for nearby municipalities," a Public Works staff member said.
Board members raised questions about the gap between the low bid and the others and were satisfied with staff’s explanation. Kevin Riley moved to accept the bid; the motion was seconded and carried by the board.
The contract award was approved at the meeting; staff did not read a detailed project schedule or contract start date during the discussion.
