Kenya Lopez honored as Yuma County art contest winner; Sun Valley robotics team earns state recognition

The Somerton Elementary District board on March 10 paused its agenda to recognize student achievements across the district.
Representatives introduced Kenya Lopez, a fifth‑grade student who was named the Yuma County winner of the Arizona 529 Future Career Art Contest and received a $529 award. The presenter said winners gathered at the state capitol and noted Kenya briefly experienced a medical emergency after the event but returned to school.
The board also honored the Sun Valley Robotinos. Mr. Munyos credited robotics coach Miss Baltasar with guiding the team to first place at a Yuma County competition (16 schools) and to a Core Values first‑place recognition at the state event, where about 63 teams competed. Miss Baltasar told the board the team includes fifth and sixth graders and a fourth grader and said the program aims to develop coding, engineering and teamwork skills; she said the group hopes to compete at higher levels in future seasons.
Medals and certificates were presented to students from multiple schools, and board members joined for photos. The robotics team’s state trip and the district’s approval of travel were noted and the board thanked staff and trustees for support.
