Alicia Garcia, the district’s test coordinator, briefed the Somerton board on assessment activity at the Feb. 10 meeting, reporting this year’s AELA participation at about 41% and saying the district had exited roughly 10% of students from AELA. She also noted work to provide parents with clearer score reports and that the district is evaluating replacement options for its internal assessment platform, Galileo, which the presenters said is going out of business.
Board members asked whether Galileo’s results correlate with the state assessment; Garcia said there is a "strong correlation" across most grades, though two grades showed weaker alignment and the district will review other platforms. She described planned family workshops and a student profile report to help parents interpret assessment scores and to show where students need additional support.
Board members discussed participation numbers and supports for English-language learners; staff said the district has about 430 migrant students (roughly half of the ELL population noted in the presentation) and that Saturday school and targeted workshops are being used to help those students.
Next steps identified by staff include continuing to compare assessment vendors, scheduling parent workshops to explain scores and providing translated, grade-level standards to families.
