Juan Castillo re-elected president; Lorena Delgado named clerk at Somerton school board

The Somerton Elementary District (4500) governing board re-elected Juan Castillo as board president and chose Lorena Delgado as clerk during its Jan. 13 meeting, with members casting voice votes to approve both appointments.

The votes came during the board’s organizational agenda. A board member moved to nominate Juan Castillo for president and the motion was seconded; the board responded in the affirmative and Castillo thanked colleagues for their confidence, saying he would “work alongside each and every one of you in support of ... staff and just ensuring that we keep our focus … which is our students, our families, our teachers, our community, our school staff.”

Later the board opened nominations for clerk. Lorena Delgado — identified in the meeting roll call as clerk — was nominated and approved. Delgado told the board she was honored to continue serving and reiterated that board decisions are made in the best interest of students, staff and the community.

The board also confirmed the meeting schedule for the coming year, agreeing to continue holding regular sessions on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Hollis building unless the board votes to change the calendar.

The board conducted the organizational votes by voice; no individual recorded roll-call vote or opposing votes were reported in the transcript. The meeting proceeded to routine reports and consent-agenda business after the organizational items.

What’s next: the board will continue its regular monthly meetings and said it plans to revisit scheduling and a proposed board retreat in April.
