District transportation staff reported to the Somerton board on Dec. 9 that the department currently has 11 certified bus drivers with two additional drivers to hire, a fleet that includes 15 regular-route buses and several ESS and preschool buses, and about 869 students transported daily.
"We have 11 certified bus drivers... we need two bus drivers more," the transportation director said, describing ongoing recruitment. The director said drivers receive annual training in defensive driving, backing and turning, student management, bullying response and school regulations.
On the topic of student boarding verification, board members asked whether ESS transportation uses a ticketing or badge scanning system. Administration said no districtwide scanning system is currently in place, but the district is "looking into it" for future use, noting both initial and recurring annual fees that affect feasibility.
Board members and administrators discussed bus aide staffing (currently provided only on ESS buses) and strategies for handling student behavior on regular routes; the transportation office said drivers use seating and direct supervision and that ESS routes retain aides.
The director also reported mileage and routing data to the board to demonstrate operations and safety practices. Administration said they will continue recruitment efforts and examine the cost-benefit of a student ID scanning system.
