Residents press board on class‑size equity and overheated classrooms

Karen Hamp, speaking during the public‑comment period, asked the board to review guidelines and monitoring related to classroom temperatures and noted staff and students were using fans and temporary measures during warm days. Hamp also raised equity concerns about Union Pleasant, saying the building has consistently higher class sizes and a larger share of special‑education and transient students.
Damon Ber provided the board with a packet of numbers on class‑size equity and urged trustees to examine how class sizes vary across elementary schools and whether the district’s current guidelines lead to inequitable experiences. Administration responded that the district is in “monitoring mode”: staffing and class‑size guidelines are set for the approved budget year and administrators track enrollment shifts; any immediate changes to sections depend on movement of students and budgetary stewardship.
Board members asked administration to prepare a readout with current class‑size numbers and to consider building climate or staff‑feedback data to inform goal‑setting at an upcoming board retreat. The superintendent said a fuller presentation on class‑size metrics and guidelines would be scheduled in a future meeting.
