Planning director reports grant activity, river-district bridge and brownfields cleanup work

At the May 14 Planning Board meeting, Planning and Inspections Director Joseph Kamperman updated members on grant and project work supporting the River District Master Plan.
Kamperman said the department had applied for a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant to repair lights and resurface the tennis courts at Memorial Park. He also noted that a joint Great Trails State Grant with the Town of Wilkesboro had been approved last year and that he "hoped to see construction documents for the 'bridge between the boros' soon," describing the project as intended to improve walkability between the two towns.
Kamperman reported that Wilkes Soil and Water is pursuing additional STRAP funds to clear debris from small streams that feed into the Yadkin River. For the Smoot Tannery Brownfields grant, staff plan to issue an RFQ for a grants manager and an environmental qualified professional to streamline grant administration so more funds can be applied to cleanup activities. He added that the town’s Unified Development Ordinance remains under review and is expected to return to the Planning Board in coming months.
