Middletown council accepts $1.63 million in library renovation grants and $56,400 in private donations

The Town of Middletown Town Council on June 15 voted to accept two foundation grants totaling $1,630,000 to support the town library renovation project and separately approved acceptance of $56,400 in private donations collected by the Friends of the Middletown Public Library.
Finance Director Mark told the council the Champlin Foundation awarded $500,000 and the Van Buren Charitable Foundation awarded $1,130,000. Staff said roughly $880,000 of the Van Buren award is earmarked for interior renovations and furnishings and $250,000 for improvements to building acoustics and sound management.
Mark also reported that the Friends of the Library forwarded $56,400 in private donations: $50,000 from Bank Newport designated for the children's learning and play area, with the remainder split per donor intent. The building committee will return to the council with specific spending recommendations for both the grant and donation funds.
Councilors moved and passed resolutions to accept both grants and the donations and authorized the finance director to allocate and expend the funds in accordance with donor intent and town purchasing policy.
