The Noble County Planning Commission approved new addresses on June 17 while excluding one disputed E911 entry that appeared on a deed for Floyd and Carol Murphy. Staff told the commission the Murphy parcel showed an address in county records despite having no structures and said the USPS and E911 office prefer that addresses for vacant lots be formalized only when a structure is established.
Commissioners discussed implications for emergency response and precedent-setting if unapproved E911 addresses are used. One member noted that E911 visibility and accurate mailbox signage are important for life-safety responses. The commission moved and approved the batch of addresses with the exception of the Murphy entry and instructed staff to send a letter to the property owners explaining the decision; staff agreed to send the letter and return with the matter if Murphy’s parcel is later developed.
The commission also agreed to implement a policy to append an 'A' suffix to accessory-unit addresses (Unit A) in coordination with USPS and the county E911 office to ensure consistent addressing and facilitate emergency response.
