City Administrator Jeff Mitchell told the Malden City Council on May 18 that work on the city’s splash pad has been delayed because of contractor issues, though needed materials have arrived and remaining tasks include equipment installation, fencing, sidewalks and restroom construction. Mitchell said a grant extension is available if the project needs more time.
Mitchell used his administrator’s report to summarize several department updates: DPS and Water/Sewer crews are working on lift stations and line repairs; Streets crews are addressing potholes and Oak Street work; Electric and Library activities were noted. He emphasized that aging infrastructure, staffing shortages and licensing constraints are compounding costs and complicating timelines, and that major sewer projects remain expensive and ongoing.
Councilors asked about timing and next steps. Mitchell said the city will prioritize completing currently delayed projects and coordinate schedules across departments. No vote was taken; the council will review progress in subsequent meetings and through the budget process if additional funding or staffing is required.
