The Franklin County Legislature voted unanimously March 2 to ask Senator Betty Little and Assemblyman D. Billy Jones to introduce legislation reauthorizing the county's authority to keep its local sales and compensating use tax at 4% for an additional two years.
The resolution, offered by the Finance Committee and moved by Legislator Dabiew with a second from Legislator Lauzon, said Franklin County's authorization to raise the county portion of the sales tax from 3% to 4% was in effect from Dec. 1, 2015 through Nov. 30, 2017 and that the additional time is needed "to continue to adequately fund the necessary programs and operations of the county government." The motion passed with all members present voting in the affirmative.
Supporters said reauthorization would preserve local revenue used for county programs. Clerk Gloria J. Valone advised the Legislature immediately afterward that the Public Safety Committee had requested the resolution be pulled for further review; the resolution language also formalizes a request that Senator Little and Assemblyman Jones introduce the necessary legislation "at the earliest possible time."
The resolution does not specify exact revenue totals or a plan for how extended proceeds would be allocated. The next step is for the county's request to be placed before the named state lawmakers for sponsorship and introduction in their respective houses.
