Commission schedules public hearings for two telecommunications towers after site reviews

The Montgomery County Planning Commission discussed two proposed telecommunications towers in work session and agreed to take both proposals to public hearing next month.
The first application, for a 160-foot monopole on Meta Creek Road submitted by Corolla Towers 2 LP, includes a voluntarily provided balloon test and a site location sited to avoid helicopter flight paths associated with a nearby hospital. The presenter noted the applicant supplied a balloon test despite a state prohibition on requiring one.
The second proposal calls for a 199-foot lattice tower on Old Pike Road. Staff reported that most recent local tower approvals have used monopole designs and that a county review will assess whether the lattice structure conforms with the comprehensive plan; staff indicated they will recommend changes if necessary. "By law, we cannot ask for proprietary information anymore," staff told commissioners, noting applicants may nevertheless voluntarily provide balloon tests and other materials.
Commissioners asked about elevation and visibility and were told applicants provided balloon-test material for review. Both items were set for public hearings at next month’s meeting so the commission can receive formal public input.
