San Bernardino City Unified School District trustees opened their June 16 meeting by recognizing three athletic teams that captured CIF championships this spring.
Mary Ran Goodwin, director of communications and community relations, introduced and thanked the Coahone High School boys varsity golf team for winning the CIF Southern Section Golf Championship, the Aoyo/Royal Valley High School girls varsity softball team for their Division 8 title, and the Sanino High School girls varsity softball team for a Division 5 Southern Region championship. Coaches, athletic directors and named student-athletes were invited forward for photos and applause.
Later in the meeting the board voted to authorize a $5,000 sponsorship for the Inland Empire Children's Book Project after a motion by Mr. Tilman and second by Vice President Abilles Grande. The donation was approved by roll call.
Trustees praised coaches and retiring athletic staff members for long-term investment in student athletics; Mr. Tilman singled out retiring athletic director Richard (Rich) Embriani for particular thanks. The recognition segment emphasized student discipline, teamwork, and school pride.
What’s next: The district will process the sponsorship payment; board minutes will reflect the recognition and the donation authorization.
