Council moves forward with Gambles Building demolition under Downtown Revitalization Grant

Wymore City Attorney reported the contract for a Downtown Revitalization Grant is being approved to tear down the Gambles Building; council denied the owner's request for more time and directed scheduling of asbestos inspection and demolition contractor review.
City Attorney Andy Carothers told the Wymore City Council on Sept. 4 that the state contract for a Downtown Revitalization Grant is being approved to demolish the dilapidated Gambles Building and that the city will receive the contract via DocuSign.
Carothers said the city can sign with the demolition contractor once the state contract is in hand. The building owner asked for more time to remove personal property, but council members indicated they had already granted substantial time and reached consensus not to allow further delay. Council asked staff to schedule asbestos inspector Bauchmann and demolition contractor Tiemann to assess abatement and landfill needs before demolition proceeds. Carothers also said the city may need an inspection warrant for 408 N 8th if the property owner refuses access for inspection.
Tim Sedlacek updated the council that the new owner of 518 N 11th plans to demolish that building and will pay mowing fees owed to the city. Tom Bliss (SENDD) outlined programs to support housing development and suggested inviting SENDD planner Jim Warrelmann for a fuller presentation to council.
