Wymore — City officials told the Wymore City Council on Nov. 20 that asbestos was identified in the Gambles building and that removal will be required before further work proceeds. City Superintendent Tim Sedlacek said Bockman completed the asbestos inspection and the city is awaiting a removal date from contractor Tieman.
Council members said parts of the Gamble’s sign have fallen and that piles of removed items are becoming a nuisance; the council directed staff to add the property to the nuisance-letter list. Kirby Cohorst raised the separate property at 213 S. 7th, saying the ceiling has fallen and that the site could become green space; that parcel is currently in litigation.
Separately, the council discussed a demolition contract for 518 N. 11th Street. Owner Dale Rudloff paid $9,100 and signed the contract; the house contains asbestos and the city is awaiting the asbestos-removal bill. Rudloff also paid for mowing and the asbestos inspection. Tim Sedlacek suggested the city could assist with backfilling the lot because dirt is available in city stockpiles; councilors did not set a timeline for backfill pending receipt of asbestos-removal costs.
Next steps: staff will seek a removal date from the asbestos contractor and send a nuisance letter regarding the Gambles property. The demolition contractor has been engaged for 518 N. 11th but asbestos-removal costs must be determined before further remediation.
