The Land and Facilities Management Committee approved a three‑year fee waiver on June 17 for Thrive Bayou Region to use the Thibodaux Middle School gymnasium for an inaugural youth summit and associated K–12 programming.
Roxanne Reed, who identified herself as a retired Lafourche Parish educator and a member of Thrive, described plans for a July 31 summit aimed at 11th–12th graders that will include college recruiters, guest speakers, participating businesses and giveaways intended to help students prepare for college. Reed said the group also plans a K–12 day that will include mental‑health counselors, doctors and dental vendors; the organization asked for the fee waiver for this event and for permission to reserve facilities for the next two to three years.
Staff confirmed that Thrive had paid the deposit and that risk management approved the organization's insurance. The motion to approve the waiver was moved by Mrs. Bourgeois, seconded by Mrs. Babin, and carried by voice vote.
Committee members expressed appreciation for the program and encouraged the organizers to continue returning to the community for follow-up programming. The committee recorded no further conditions other than the standard deposit and custodial arrangements.
