Police Chief Robert Brands presented Detective Brylan Morlan with the Mt. Vernon Police Department’s Officer of the Year award at the Jan. 21 city council meeting, citing Morlan’s proactive approach, thorough work ethic and contributions to training and specialized teams.
Chief Brands said four officers were nominated for the award this year — Brenton Deadmond, Michael Gray, Michael Wilson and Detective Morlan — and that an awards committee selected Morlan based on consistent high performance and civic contributions. Detective Sergeant Kevin Jackson nominated Morlan, highlighting his proactive investigations, assistance to other detectives, work on the high-risk team, EAO certification and role as a firearms instructor.
Detective Morlan accepted the recognition and thanked his family and fellow officers.
Chief Brands also announced that the department will hold a Citizens Police Academy on Saturday, March 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; registration details are available on the city website. He added that the department is accepting applications and will hold testing on Feb. 15 for prospective hires.
