Mount Vernon City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel to retire in May; council appoints Nathan McKenna to three boards

Mayor John Lewis told the council that City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel will retire in May and the council offered public thanks for her service. "Her guidance and inspiration over the years has made the Council look good and she will be missed," Mayor Lewis said.
Bechtel responded that she "really appreciated the opportunity," said the city has "come a long way from ten years ago," and called it a privilege to be part of the City of Mount Vernon. Council Member Joe Gliosci said Bechtel "has set the standard high and Assistant City Manager Nathan McKenna has a lot to shoot for." Council Member Ray Botch added that Bechtel has done "an outstanding job" and that he could not think of a manager who has done more for the city.
Separately, Mayor Lewis presented the appointment of Nathan McKenna to three local boards: the 911 Board, the Fire Pension Board and the Minority Affairs and Human Relations Board. Council Member Ray Botch moved to accept the appointment, seconded by Council Member Mike Young; the motion passed (Yeas: Botch, Gliosci, Young, Lewis; Absent: Moore).
As recorded in the meeting, the Mayor also reminded the public of a Jefferson County Farm Bureau pancake breakfast scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Rolland Lewis Building from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The council did not take other personnel or hiring actions during the meeting.
