YouthBuild speaks to Mount Vernon council about GED and housing project

Mayor John Lewis introduced Rebeccah McConnaughay and Lynn Foreman of YouthBuild of South Central Illinois at the Nov. 4 Mount Vernon City Council meeting. McConnaughay said the program helps participants ages 16–24 obtain a GED and vocational experience in construction, customer service and sales.
She described a donated house in Centralia the students are rebuilding; when completed the house will be sold to a low‑income family and proceeds returned to the program to support future participants. McConnaughay said YouthBuild is a six‑month program with an additional 12 months of aftercare and is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Mayor Lewis thanked the visitors for sharing the information with the council and community.
