He urged residents to get wells tested and described the Preliminary/Onsite Efficient Treatment (POET) program the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will support: a $600 initial test, a $600 confirmatory test that the DEP will reimburse if both are positive, DEP‑funded installation of a POET system and semiannual filter replacement assistance. The mayor cautioned that future property owners would be responsible for ongoing maintenance costs if ownership changes.
Separately, the mayor relayed a letter from the Haledon Police Department that the department experienced a cyber incident. The notice advised residents to remain vigilant for identity theft and said the department is offering a year of identity protection services for affected individuals and to contact Haledon with questions.
The borough encouraged residents to test wells and to report positive results so municipal staff can track potential spread. Council members discussed cost quotes residents had received (one councilor referenced a $795 initial test quote) and asked whether the DEP communicates positive test results to the borough; the mayor said the borough has not received formal notifications and has asked residents to report positives voluntarily.
