Tazewell County adopts Safe Streets plan to target highest-crash corridors

Tazewell County supervisors voted March 3 to adopt a countywide Safe Streets Action Plan intended to identify and reduce fatal and serious-injury crashes.
The plan, presented by county staff, uses crash reports, 911 data and economic and transportation analyses to map a high-injury network and prioritize countermeasures. The consultant’s work, the board was told, couples engineering changes — high-friction paving, turn and merge lane adjustments, improved roadway markings and reflectors — with behavioral interventions such as seatbelt and impairment enforcement.
“As a living document, we’ll run the high-injury network every year and check the items off that we did,” the presenter said, urging the board to adopt the plan and sign a supporting letter needed for grant applications. Board members stressed that many of the recommended items are relatively low cost and actionable by the county or with VDOT cooperation.
Supervisor Eric (speaker 6) explained the funding pathway: adopting the plan signals local commitment required by the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program and positions the county to apply for grants. The board agreed to execute a resolution and sign letters of support to accompany future grant proposals.
The board directed staff to return implementation steps and to provide annual reports on progress and use of grant funds.
