County legal and planning staff opened a public hearing Sept. 10 on proposed amendments to the Tazewell County Enterprise Zone. The amendment would remove roughly 400 acres of steep, non-developable hillside from the zone and add 24 parcels in the Tazewell area — parcels the presenters said are more suitable for capital investment and job creation.
Legal staff summarized the procedural requirements for amending an enterprise zone and described the required two-public-hearing sequence under the Code of Virginia. Staff confirmed certified-notice mailings were sent to property owners on Aug. 30 and that the county will again advertise the proposal prior to the October meeting when the board will consider adoption of the ordinance to revise zone boundaries.
During the hearing, a property owner and other residents asked whether inclusion would affect taxes or land use; staff clarified that the inclusion is an economic-incentive designation for investment and does not change current tax classification or restrict existing uses. After public comment and staff responses, a supervisor moved and the board set the second required public hearing for the board's October meeting to allow additional notice and comment.
The board did not adopt any ordinance at the Sept. 10 hearing; that vote may occur only after the second public hearing and required advertising.
