Tazewell supervisors approve major landfill capacity increase after public hearing

The Tazewell County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve a major amendment to the county solid waste management plan, increasing the landfill’s permitted capacity from 2,200,000 cubic yards to 3,600,000 cubic yards.
Mister Collins (staff member) told the board the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requires the public hearing and plan amendment because the county is expanding the active face of the landfill to build a new cell. "We’re going from 2,200,000 cubic yards to 3,600,000 cubic yards after this new cell is constructed and completed," Collins said during the presentation.
Ken Dunford, the county’s engineering representative, answered technical questions about operations and leachate management. Dunford described planned work to elevate and repair leachate wells and pumps, which staff said is needed as landfill elevations change.
After brief public comment and staff responses, the board moved and approved the amendment on a voice vote. No roll‑call tally was recorded in the minutes; the chair stated the motion carried.
The amendment updates the county’s plan to reflect the expanded footprint so the locality remains in compliance with DEQ and the Virginia Administrative Code. Staff said the amendment is administrative and intended to align permitted capacity with the new construction timeline; separate permitting and construction steps will follow.
The board recorded no formal legal challenge or petition during the hearing; the item concluded with the board moving on to the next agenda matter.
