Principal McMahan highlights field trips, instructional supports and a 15% testing goal

McMahan described several educational field trips: 3rd- and 4th-year engineering students visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where they observed autonomous vehicles; 6th- and 7th-grade science students are scheduled to go to the Challenger Learning Center for a simulated Mars mission; high school science and biology students will visit the Indiana Dunes Succession Trail; and 4th graders attended Kankakee River Days to study water quality and regional ecology.
On curriculum and assessment, McMahan said the district will introduce Exact Path for middle-school students to target weak areas and will continue elementary data meetings to monitor progress. The district plans teacher training in phonics and will implement Smekens writing strategies, with a Smekens representative scheduled to visit three times this school year to work with teachers. McMahan said the district aims for an approximately 15% increase in ILEARN, NWEA and SAT-related measures across grade levels.
