The Broken Bow City Council opened a public hearing on Ordinance No. 1252 at 6:13 p.m. on Jan. 11 to consider mandatory trash removal fees in response to rising tipping fees.
City Administrator Dan Knoell said landfill and scale fees will increase Feb. 1, 2022, and that S&L Sanitation requested the city increase the amount it pays for trash removal; he estimated residential utility bills could rise by roughly $1.00 per month if the ordinance were approved. Knoell recommended the council not waive the three‑reading requirement and to bring the ordinance back at the next meeting for public consideration.
The council voted to not waive the three readings (Ayes: David Schmidt, Jacob Holcomb, Larry Miller; Abstain: Chris Myers), so the ordinance was not adopted that night and will return for formal readings and a vote at a subsequent meeting. Council discussion noted the last change to trash fees had been around 2013, according to Knoell.
