Napoleon City Council voted June 15 to authorize the city manager to apply for a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) through FEMA to replace the fire departments self-contained breathing apparatus.
Lori told council the apparatus purchased in 2012 is approaching the end of its service life in 2028 and estimated replacement cost is $462,212. She said the federal grant requires a 5% local match if awarded, which staff calculated as $23,110.60.
Because the grant cycle closed June 22, staff asked to walk the resolution onto the agenda and to pass it under suspension so the application could be submitted. Council suspended the rules and passed Resolution 019-26 by roll call.
Staff noted the city would be responsible for the 5% match if the grant is awarded and that the department could reapply next year if not funded. The resolution authorizes the city manager to execute all documents necessary to apply for and accept the grant.
