Godday PTG says it raised about $30,000 this year; district to receive 500 backpacks from Cradles to Crayons

"Tonight we simply want to celebrate the incredible partnership that we've built between our PTG, the school staff, and our families," said Lorraine Buffman, who identified herself as a K–5 literacy coach in Middletown and the PTG treasurer. She told the committee the group became a 501(c)(3) last October to support fundraising and sponsorships.
Buffman and other PTG leaders detailed regular student traditions and events the group funds, including weekly popcorn for students, grade‑level dances, the GLA variety show and teacher appreciation activities. The PTG also supports curricular experiences: book fairs that provided about $700 in books to the school librarian, Thanksgiving baskets (about $1,500 in donations) and a range of subsidized field trips.
When a committee member asked for a ballpark on the PTG's annual contribution, a PTG representative said, "It's about $30,000," giving a sense of the group's local fundraising capacity.
Superintendent Niemeyer later noted the district has additional community supports in hand: Miss Mainzer secured a Cradles to Crayons award of 500 backpacks that the district will distribute in the summer. Distribution details were not specified at the meeting; committee members discussed prioritizing students in need, including McKinney‑Vento families, and asked staff to confirm the distribution plan.
The PTG leaders also described community partnerships and events that brought families together—STEM night, planetarium evenings, a bingo night that draws older students, and collaborations with URI athletics—and said their goals for the coming year include sustaining enrichment supports, expanding grant funding for teachers and increasing volunteer engagement.
The committee did not take any formal action on the PTG report. The PTG presentation concluded with committee members praising the group's outreach and volunteers; no additional funding decisions were made at the meeting.
