Mayor seeks continued funding for second crossing guard, pursues DOT beacons near Granville schools

Mayor Paul Labas told the board on Aug. 4 that he and Trustee Heather Leaman met with new Granville Central School Superintendent Michael Hall to request continued funding for a second crossing guard near the Stewarts/Rawson Avenue crosswalk.
Labas said the second crossing guard has been well received by students and parents, has clearly improved safety in that area, and also serves as a backup when police officers are dispatched to emergencies and cannot staff the crosswalk. He said he and the DPW superintendent are continuing to press the New York State Department of Transportation for lighted beacon signs near the campus crosswalk.
Labas told the board he discouraged School Board officials from contacting DOT directly about the beacon request so the village can coordinate with DOT through DPW. No timetable or firm commitment from NYSDOT was provided at the meeting; Mayor Labas said only that he expects continued cooperation and hoped the School Board would continue to fund the crossing-guard position.
The board heard no formal motion or vote on the crossings at this meeting; the item was presented as an update on safety efforts and intergovernmental coordination.
