Desha County judges on Dec. 18 approved continuing an asbestos abatement project at the former Delta Memorial Hospital in Dumas after county officials said a 2023 inspection identified additional asbestos not reflected in a 2013 study.
County Judge (transcript: Judge Smith) said the contractor initially requested an additional $82,500 after the newer inspection. Judge Smith said he negotiated the additional cost down to $49,800, which he described as saving the county $32,700 compared with the contractor’s requested increase.
JP Hollis Mankin moved to continue with the abatement project with a goal of completing it by the end of 2025. JP Kenneth Holt Jr. seconded the motion; the court approved it unanimously.
The meeting record does not provide line-item funding sources for the additional expense or a contractor name; County Judge said the project will continue with the negotiated amount. The court did not record any amendments to the motion beyond the continuation approval.
Next step: county administration is to proceed with abatement under the negotiated price and report back to the court as appropriate.
