Silver Lake council re-elects Medard "Hugh" Murfin, approves $96,281.73 claim docket and sewer adjustment

The Silver Lake Town Council on Jan. 14 re-elected Medard "Hugh" Murfin as council president and approved a $96,281.73 claim docket during a meeting at Silver Lake Town Hall that opened at 7:29 p.m.
Council member Nichole Taylor nominated Murfin to remain council president, citing his daytime availability in retirement; Murfin agreed. Taylor made the motion and Murfin seconded; the minutes record the motion carried with all in favor. The council also approved the Dec. 29, 2025 year-end minutes on a motion from Taylor, seconded by Murfin.
Under new business, Marshal Jason McGlennen told the council he had issued an ordinance violation covering two parcels on Edgewater Street: one owned by the current resident and a small strip tied to a deceased owner. The council voted to continue enforcement regarding the living owner and directed Town Attorney Austin Rovenstine to send a letter to collect the violation. McGlennen told the council the prior owner had historically maintained the small strip.
The council then accepted the claim docket totaling $96,281.73 after a motion from Taylor and a second from Murfin; the minutes say the motion carried with all in favor. During the letters portion of the agenda, Bernard and Susan Manns requested an adjustment to their utility bill after a water leak. The council denied a water credit but approved a sewer adjustment of $24.45; the adjustment passed on a motion by Taylor and a second by Murfin.
Department reports noted routine operations. Marshal Jason McGlennen provided a call history and said several vehicle problems have been resolved. Superintendent Joey McNeal was listed as absent while snowplowing town streets. Fire Chief John Conley presented the department's 2025 run report and submitted bylaws for Murfin's signature; town counsel reviewed and adjusted wording but did not change the bylaws' substance.
The council set its next regular meeting for Feb. 11, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 7:41 p.m.
