Smith-Green board accepts personnel report; staff outlines assessment changes and title grants audit

The Smith-Green Community Schools board accepted the personnel report Aug. 18, recognizing several new hires and hearing updates on assessments, a title grants audit and enrollment figures.
A staff presenter identified new personnel: Dr. Nikki Baker as a new English teacher (replacing Mr. Turner), Drew Buffer as the new baseball coach (replacing Mr. Turner), Tyler Hoffman as the junior-high cross country coach (replacing Mrs. Foxton) and Ashley Smith as the high-school cross country coach (replacing Mr. Fox). The personnel report was presented and approved as part of the meeting business.
On assessment policy, staff said the formative assessment grant plan has changed: students in grades three through eight will no longer take the NWA checkpoints this year. Staff said the district will adopt a new standards-based assessment tool for grades nine through 12 intended to sharpen secondary-level assessment in math and ELA.
Staff also reported the district's title grants are undergoing a state audit. The presenter described the audit as a "heavy lift" but said the district expects state feedback that will identify improvement areas.
The board heard several campus updates: the principal praised teacher work days and new staff orientation; transportation staff (including April Figer, Sandra Cook and Sarah Mutter) were credited for managing schedule changes and partnerships. The principal noted a student council parking-spot proposal submitted by junior Reese Menthorne and highlighted early athletics successes, including two girls finishing in the top 40 at a cross-country meet.
Enrollment was reported at approximately 1,137 students this year, up from about 1,104 last year, and trustees were reminded of the ISBA conference on Sept. 15'16.
Why it matters: The personnel changes fill classroom and coaching roles for the new school year; assessment-tool changes affect how student progress will be measured; and the title grants audit could affect federal funding compliance.
