Smith-Green spotlights Rising Stars, previews ParentSquare-powered website and academic supports

At the Jan. 6 meeting, Smith-Green Community Schools highlighted student achievement, previewed a new district website, and heard updates on academic supports.

Mrs. P presented four juniors nominated to the Indiana Association of School Principals’ Rising Stars program and named Nola Vanski, Charlotte Elliot and Delaney Hat as selected nominees from the district. The board congratulated the students for their academic and extracurricular achievements.

District staff demonstrated a draft of a new district website hosted through ParentSquare that will link calendar events and messages so updates pushed via ParentSquare also populate the website. The presenter described goals of easier navigation, mobile previews, consolidated quick links (for departments such as health services and human resources) and a plan to train local secretaries to maintain school pages. "If I click that, it not only updates the calendar, it updates the website now, too," the presenter said.

In administrative reports, the principal described a pilot of weekly grade checks and study tables led by assistant activities staff; study-table attendance has tripled and, according to the principal, the district has "lost no one for ineligibility this year" with the "F list" reduced to about one-fourth its prior size. The curriculum director said state guidance will shift next-year emphasis to math and early math intervention.

Administrators also noted upcoming athletics events, a planned weight-room dedication on March 4 and the addition of a local suicide-awareness group to the district resources page.
