Utilities update: council hears $255,000 restoration estimate for old water tower, $68,000 removal option

Utility Supervisor Kent Slater updated the South Whitley Town Council on Nov. 12 about ongoing utility work and options for the towns older water tower.
Slater said construction by API should be complete by Thanksgiving and reported several pieces of equipment status: the towns leaf vac is currently in the shop and a water pump that had gone out should be back in service by the end of the following week. He told the council the town had received three rough estimates related to the water tower: approximately $255,000 to restore and paint the old water tower; about $68,000 to take it down; and $15,000 to touch up the new tower.
Slater suggested the town pursue grants or inquire with the Whitley County Community Foundation about a possible 50/50 grant to help fund restoration or removal. The council did not vote on the tower at the Nov. 12 meeting and directed further discussion and research on funding options.
